About
Personal
I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful wife and two horribly mischievous cats. We live in central Kentucky, which is an ideal mix of scenery and culture with a low cost of living. It’s certainly not the best place to network and socialize with other like-minded developers, but the internet (and Twitter) have solved enough of this to make it acceptable.
Hobbies & Interests
I like to make things. Whether that means designing a website or poorly playing a musical instrument, it’s important to me that I produce something in my days on this planet.
It’s probably easier to provide a short list of some tools I like to keep handy in my pursuit of happiness:
- To be productive and happy, I require a Macintosh running OS X.
- Python is my programming language of choice, as it is both elegant and powerful.
- Django is my web framework of choice.
- When possible I code in TextMate, a modern text editor. (I also prefer Vim over Emacs)
- For web projects, I test in Safari and patch as needed for other browsers.
Day Job
By day, I work full time as a developer at a private liberal arts college. As a (mostly) solo developer, I usually find myself working through all facets of a project. This usually involves interacting with our academic database, which is powered by Informix running under HPUX. Being responsible for all of the engineering from database logic to the user interface is both burden and boon, but I keep things interesting by experimenting with new tools and techniques when possible.
Education
For my undergraduate studies, I attended Centre College and received a Bachelor of Science in the field of Computer Science upon graduation in 2006. Centre, while known nationally for its high academic standards, might not be mentioned as a first choice among those interested in the computer sciences, but I am quite pleased with the breadth of knowledge that a liberal arts education provides.
